Most production farms standardize on PLA as the primary material and PETG as the secondary. PLA shrinks roughly 0.2 to 0.5% with minimal warping and holds a wide processing window, which is what keeps failure rates flat across dozens of machines running the same G-code. Add ASA, composites, or engineering materials only when a customer's part actually requires the heat, UV, or impact performance. Every additional SKU adds changeover labor and inventory complexity.
Run PLA when throughput, dimensional accuracy, and cost per part drive the job. Run PETG when the end use demands toughness, moisture resistance, or outdoor service. PETG shrinks more (roughly 0.5 to 1.5% vs PLA's 0.2 to 0.5%) and absorbs moisture faster, so it costs you more in handling discipline and drying capacity. Most farms carry both and route jobs by requirement rather than switching wholesale.
Polymaker defines High Speed by three measurable criteria: flowability (consistent extrusion at 24 mm³/s, equivalent to 300 mm/s at 0.2 mm layer height with a 0.4 mm nozzle), formability (same surface quality, overhangs, and bridging as at low speed), and functionality (retains at least 80% of mechanical properties). Most "fast" filament marketing publishes no flow number at all. On a modern CoreXY farm, standard filament becomes the throughput bottleneck long before the machine does.
It depends on your feed path and job mix. 1kg spools fit the AMS and suit multi-color or short-run work. 3kg spools lower cost per gram and cut changeovers, giving roughly a kilometer of continuous filament, but they require external mounting. Most mature farms run a hybrid: 1kg in the AMS for complex jobs, bulk on external feeders for long single-color production runs. Factor in spool tare as well, which adds 120 to 260g of dead freight weight per 1kg spool at pallet volume.
PETG needs drying routinely. It absorbs moisture faster than PLA and prints wet with bubbling, stringing, and weak layer adhesion. Polymaker PETG dries at 55 to 60°C for about 6 hours; PolyMax™ PETG needs 65°C for 6 hours. PLA is more forgiving but degrades over weeks in humid storage, and must stay below 55°C when drying since it softens near 60°C. At production volume, sealed storage plus a dedicated drying station on the PETG line costs less than the scrap it prevents.
